Wild Horses: an Exercise in Transforming Visual Imagery into Musical Imagery
Edwin P. Fattig♦
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor

The presentation will discuss an extensive work for jazz ensemble, entitled Wild Horses. This three-movement work is inspired by a painting featuring Arabian horses as figure, an open field from New Mexico as foreground, and Los Bravos Mountains in Colorado as the background. The painting was interpreted in the composition in a variety of ways. Discussion will focus on melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and timbral aspects of each movement and how these are used to portray imagery from the painting. Portions of the piece will be heard as part of the presentation.
