Disability Awareness at NMCAA Head Start Locations

Head Start provides an opportunity for pre-K children to gain knowledge and social skills-- both necessary for entrance into kindergarten. Head Start students with disabilities may require special accommodations or curriculum to help them achieve similar levels of readiness. The purpose of this research is to determine the level of disability awareness among staff at Northeast Missouri Community Action Agency Head Start locations. A survey was designed to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of Head Start staff regarding students with disabilities at seven locations in Northeastern Missouri. Survey topics include staff attitudes and behaviors, parent attitudes and behaviors, and facility accessibility. Program strengths and potential areas for improvement at NMCAA Head Start locations regarding student disability awareness will be identified. The results will be shared with NMCAA Head Start supervisors and disability awareness education sessions will be discussed.
