A distinction seems to occur between writers in the high school English classroom and writers outside of it. Real writers work is recognized for its merit, and they write for an authentic audience. What if high school students could feel like real writers by being provided an authentic audience and a real-work application for their writing? This study examines how providing students the opportunity to publish work outside of the classroom affects their quality of writing. Conducted in one section of junior English, this study involves 22 students in a suburban Missouri high school. Over the course of the semester, students wrote a variety of essays, which were analyzed for quality in comparison with non-published essays. Data also includes personal observations, conferences with students, and student work.
