Gender Performance Difference in Ironman Triathlons
Sarah E. Branch* and Allison R. Bearly
Dr. James A. Padfield, Faculty Mentor

The difference in performance times between genders has been well-established in endurance events, however, typically only top finishers are studied. This pilot study of preliminary data examines the difference in total finishing time between men and women in Ironman Triathlons. Using archival triathlon data, the finishing times for the first, 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile finishers for both men and women were identified and the next nine finishers recorded, creating a cohort of ten athletes for each quartile. This study found that as placement time increases the difference between mens and womens performance time also increases. That is to say, the finishers in the first quartile have a smaller gender performance difference than those finishing in the following quartiles.
