Wagner's Meistersinger von Nurnberg between Art and Philosophy

Dr. Sam McClure, Faculty Mentor
For this presentation I would like to do an analysis of the Wagners Overture to Meistersinger von Nurnberg. From a musical point of view, I would like to concentrate my attention on the formal structure of the piece, trying to show, on one side, the tools that Wagner used to build this masterpiece, and, on the other, its relationship with the entire opera, through the use of Leitmotifs, that have particular meanings associated with different moments of the work. From a philosophical point of view I would like to show how the opera, in particular the Overture, is a miniature of a larger conception of Art and Life in Wagners Weltanschaung. This opera is an explicit sign of the idea of radical renovation that Wagner wanted to bring in the cultural background of his time; and the relation between the plot and his musical realization is the most concrete proof.
