Nature in Music: Finding Musical Expression in Natural Phenomena

This is a presentation of four original student musical compositions that derive their inspiration from naturally occurring elements. "Red Sprites" refers to a rare sort of upper atmospheric lightning. It is scored for glockenspiel, xylophone, marimba, percussion, and electronics. This piece employs sound mass, minimalist elements, and a symmetrical hexachord instead of traditional tonal relationships. "Virga," for cello and electronics, attempts to capture the phenomenon of precipitation that evaporates before reaching the ground. It involves varied influences, including non-western scales, sound mass, and extended cello techniques. "Above The Clouds," for small wind ensemble, is inspired by the view from Pikes Peak, where clouds form below the viewer. It utilizes wind-like effects and is intended to provide an aural representation of the mountain. "Sunset Song," for SATB chorus, is a setting of a text by Bea Forrester. Reminiscent of the delicate hues at sunset, this piece uses chromaticism and text painting.
