Do Gender Quotas Promote Women’s Political Representation? A Cross National Study

This study proposes to examine the role that gender quotas play in the representation of women in relation to social conditions and the electoral systems. Gender quotas are employed in many proportional representation electoral systems (like that used in Israel and the Netherlands) where a proportion of the candidates provided on the party’s list are “reserved” for women.. This project proposes to examine the impact of gender quotas on women’s representation in parliaments, examining data from a number of democracies. For the purposes of this study I will consider a democracy any country that scored a 4 or higher on the Freedom House Index. In addition to data on the extent to which gender quotas are used, I also collected data on alternative factors (such as socio economic variables, institutional variables, and demographic characteristics)
