The Move of Theatre from Broadway into Homes around the World
Joanne E. Heggemann
Dr. Elaine McDuff, Faculty Mentor

Whether you are on stage performing, watching television, listening to the radio, or simply telling a story about your day you are participating in a form of theatre. Psychologists such as Jacob Moreno, Albert Bandura, and social activist Augusto Boal realized the impact theatre has on peoples lives and decided to use theatre to promote social change by using forum theatre, psychodramas, and many other variations on the art form. Theatre is no longer only for entertainment and contained on Broadway or your television set. Now theatre is being utilized globally to educate and heal. While it is great to read about how theatre is affecting lives across the globe, it is an entirely different experience seeing the impact first hand. While interning at Artscape Theatre I was able to whitness what their part in influencing social change by working on the Mitchells Plain Oral History Project.
