Synthesis and Characterization of Some Novel Noria-like Molecular Capsules

Host-guest chemistry is an exciting field with several practical applications, including drug delivery and water purification. The molecular capsule known as Noria may be well suited to this type of chemistry since it contains a large central cavity.1 Surprisingly, little work has been done on changing the two reactants (resorcinol and glutaraldehyde) used in the Noria synthesis to see if different Noria-like capsules with unique properties can be made. Specifically, 1,6-hexanedial, 1,7-heptanedial, 1,8-octanedial, and 1,3-benzenedimethanal were selected as promising substitutes for glutaraldehyde in the Noria reaction. We also plan to further functionalize the products by reaction with ethyl bromoacetate to give a total of eight novel molecular capsules. Synthetic methodology and spectroscopic data for the above mentioned aldehydes (formed from the corresponding alcohols) and the final capsule products will be presented. (1) Kudo, H. et al.
