Chytrid Fungus Analysis

We are seeking to detect the presence of chytridiomycete, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), which is a fungal pathogen found in amphibians. This pathogen has contributed to the overall endangerment of amphibian species worldwide. We have samples from three amphibian populations in a geographically isolated region that are vulnerable to extinction and are of conversation concern. By isolating genomic DNA from these populations and running a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) we can test to determine if Bd is present in these populations or not. By evaluating the presence of Bd in various populations, especially ones that are geographically isolated, we can speculate as to the spread of this fungus and its overall impact on amphibians. Knowing more about Bd will help us evaluate the risks of extinction and develop effective management strategies.
