Drug Use and Label Interpretation of College Students

The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors towards prescription drug use among undergraduate students. Previous studies indicated health literacy among Americans was low and have identified problems with college students misusing medications. Eighty undergraduate students completed a thirty-question survey consisting of multiple choice, true or false, Likert-type items, and open-ended questions to assess their literacy of prescription and over the counter drug labels, as well as their attitude and behavior towards the use of medications. It was hypothesized that participants would have high knowledge and literacy levels, but would not have high attitude or behavior scores to correspond. High average knowledge scores were noted alongside of lower attitude and behavior scores. No statistical differences were noted when comparing the data between years in school or genders.
