Tobacco Cessation Services for a Small Mid-Western Community

Description: Eta Sigma Gamma along with the American Lung Association and Campus-Community Alliance for Smoke-free Environments offered free smoking cessation services to area adult community members. Objectives: After certification as Freedom from Smoking Instructors, Gammans provided cessation classes to and coordinate services for area community members who wanted to quit smoking. Discussion: Gammans provided the services and the class during fall 2010. Three months after the class, 25% of participants reported still being quit.Implications for health education and/or Eta Sigma Gamma - One-fifth of area adults currently smoke, but 51.3% intend to quit in the next six months (CTPR, 2009). Conclusions: Tobacco products and their effects on health are among the highest leading causes of morbidity and mortality in our nation. (MDHSS, n.d.). The results produced by our program have proved to be successful with the cessation-rate of our class being above the national average.
