Vocabulary Comprehension Strategies for Independent Reading

There are several methods students use to learn the meaning of words when striving to read independently; however research has failed to show a consistent strategy that children use to learn the meanings of new words they discover while reading independently. This study was conducted with 12 third-grade students in a rural school district. They were taught five strategies (use a dictionary, use etymology, use contextual clues, ask a neighbor, ask the teacher) to learn the meaning of words and were instructed to use these strategies during their daily independent reading time. At the conclusion of the study, more children were using independent reading strategies and staying on-task during their independent reading time.
