Babajide O. Adio
Dr. Diane Johnson, Faculty Mentor
Unlike most of the world, Infertility among the Yoruba women of Nigeria is a major illness. This paper shows different traditional perspectives on infertility including understandings about causes and treatments. A personal narrative interweaves the strong traditional culture with the modern scientific medicine on infertility. This paper addresses the blame put on women for being infertile, and also exposes many different causes and treatment options of the modern medicine practice. The paper also emphasizes the extent to which the Yoruba women will go to become fertile because of the public stigma attached to infertility.
