Behold the Lamb of God: A Survey of the Agnus Dei in Twentieth-Century Art Music
Katie J. Lakner
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor
The Latin Mass has been both a liturgical and a musical form for many centuries. With the increased secularization of art music in the 19th and 20th centuries, there appears to have been a general decline in the number of Mass settings written by concert composers. Nevertheless, a number of significant settings can be found, several of which are quite recent. The purpose of this presentation will be to examine and compare a single Mass movement (the Agnus Dei) from each of several contemporary settings. The presentation will include a performance of an original setting of the text by the presenter.
