Skirting the Issue: Women in the Protestant Reformation
Heidi L. Geisbuhler
Dr. Mark Appold, Faculty Mentor
Many people have heard of Martin Luther, but what about his female contemporaries, including his wife, Katharina von Bora? Far from silent and inactive background characters, the women of the Protestant Reformation were often ambitious and vocal about their beliefs during this time of great change in Christianity. My presentation will explore the fact that, despite historically garnering far less attention than their male counterparts, religious women in the Reformation were highly active and influential, both in the home and in the public sphere of Reformation society. Through examples of female Reformation figures like Katharina von Bora Luther, Wibrandis Rosenblatt, Katharina Schutz Zell, Argula von Stauff von Grumbach, and Olimpia Fulvia Morata, I will provide an overview of the many unique and important contributions women made to the Reformation movement.
