Violin Concerto No.1 in D Major Op. 19, by Sergei Prokofiev

Prokofiev began his first violin concerto in D major, Op. 19 in 1915 as a concertino, yet by its completion in the summer of 1917, it emerged as a full scale, three-movement concerto. When the scheduled fall premier in St. Petersburg was cancelled due to political upheaval (as well as difficulty in finding a soloist willing to play it), it was not until 1923, 6 years later, that the concerto was premiered in Paris by Serge Koussevitzky. The Soviet premier came two days later by two young budding Russian musicians, Nathan Milstein and Vladimir Horowitz. The following year, Joseph Szigeti enthusiastically embraced the piece, first performing it in Prague, then subsequently touring Europe and America with the concerto. Since, it has joined the ranks of mainstream violin repertoire. The ethereal, meditative song heard at the beginning of the first movement is the small concertino melody Prokofiev penned in early 1915.
