Increasing Student Engagement and Comprehension Through Literature Circles

Methods of engaging students in the classroom have always been a key issue in the field of education. Through the use of literature circles and cooperative learning, classroom engagement and social learning can be increased. This research focuses on the use of literature circles and cooperative learning in conjunction with the study of Night by Elie Wiesel and various poems throughout a poetry unit. Throughout the research, the level of direction given to students as well as the groups sizes and members will vary as to give a better picture of which practices are most effective in the classroom.The research covers the initial stages of classroom implementation, classroom observations, as well as an analysis of assessments used throughout the units.
