Harnessing the Power of Tides
Elisabeth J. Little
Dr. Eduardo Velasco, Faculty Mentor
As concerns for the environment and limited energy resources become more desperate, there is increasing focus on renewable energy with low environmental impact. Tidal power has become the frontrunner for the cleanest, most consistent energy available. In the US, hydroelectric power, in the form of dams, is the largest source of renewable power. Tidal power devices are expected to have little environmental impact, but since these systems are so new, the extent of the interference is not fully known. This report will discuss the benefits of tidal power compared to other renewable resources like solar and wind. It will also explore other types of hydrokinetic power and how these systems harness the kinetic energy of the waters in which they operate. Because tides and waves are so consistent, hydrokinetic power may become the most reliable and efficient renewable energy source.
