East St. Louis School District (1991-2002): The Relationship Between Funding and Achievement
Paya M. Rhodes
Dr. Sharon Squires, Faculty Mentor
Funding in school districts has been a major issue in news today; a problem that is relevant in the East St. Louis school district as well. Jonathan Kozol visited schools in the East St. Louis school district to prove that funding is an important aspect in receiving a good quality education. In this study, Kozol’s research was replicated 12 years later in the East St. Louis school district. This was done through a series of interviews, visits and content analysis of the school district, in hopes of determining if there have been any significant changes in the amount of funding the district receives and if there is a relationship between funding and the student’s achievement level. The conclusions are that as funding in the school district increased, the student success levels did not, and the East St. Louis school district appears to have an adequate amount of funding, on paper.
