I touch, I talk, iPad: Applications for Communication Disorders

The purpose of this project was to explore applications of the iPad for treating people who have communication disorders. Apps for the iPad are exploding, as any visit to iTunes will attest. YouTube videos abound already showing children and adults with special needs using the iPad. The CMDS research team reviewed a multitude of apps that had potential for use in speech therapy, language therapy, literacy, aural rehabilitation and alternative/ augmentative communication. An annotated list of clinical apps was developed and posted on the CMDS website as a resource for working clinicians and students. A survey about the iPad and using it in therapy was developed and administered to student clinicians in the Truman State University Speech and Hearing Clinic. After trying the iPad in therapy, clinicians were interviewed and surveyed again. Results of these therapy trials will be discussed.
