The Summoner: A Composition for French Horn Incorporating Extended Performance Techniques
John R. Freese♦* and Kayla N. Hawkins
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor
For the past fifty years, composers have demonstrated a keen interest in exploring the expanded sound potential of traditional instruments. The use of non-standard performance practices provides the composer with a much wider sound pallet than would otherwise be possible. The Summoner, commissioned by Kayla Hawkins, is an original composition for solo French Horn composed by the presenter. While portions of the composition use standard performance practice, other sections incorporate expanded performance practice in which dynamics, timbre, and articulation become more important than pitch and rhythm. The presentation will discuss elements of the composition (including harmonic language, notation and use of extended techniques) and will address the collaborative process between composer and performer. A performance of The Summoner will be included.
