Dietary Ratio of Simple to Complex Carbohydrate Consumption and its Relationship to Performance in Division II Swimmers

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of simple and complex carbohydrates to swim performance. Thirteen female members of an NCAA Division II swim team recorded dietary intake for a total of six days. An in-season, 3-day dietary diary was recorded 4 weeks prior to the end-of-season championship meet. The pre-competition, 3-day diary was recorded for the days leading up to competition. Information from self-reported diet logs for each athlete was entered into a computer food analysis program to estimate total simple and complex carbohydrate consumption. Simple and complex carbohydrates and the ratio of simple-to- complex carbohydrates were computed. Numerical values were assigned to each performance based on a point scaled developed by USA Swimming. The relationship of each food source will be computed to assess their contribution to championship meet performance.
