Everyone learns differently. For most though, hands on learning is an effective way to put theoretical knowledge into practical use. So our group of students from COMM 471: Persuasion Theory sought out a way to apply theory to practice within the Kirksville area. Our goal was to learn from the community and hopefully do some good along the way. In this regard, we discovered that the Kirksville Area Technical Center, an organization that offers free GED classes and programs to improve reading, math, and basic life skills, could benefit from our study of persuasion theory. Specifically, the Tech Center needed an effective advertising campaign. Our group, through the application of fantasy theme analysis and the cultural parable of the benevolent community, redesigned the Tech Center's fliers and produced a public service announcement about its services. We appreciate the Tech Center's presupposition that everyone deserves the chance to learn. Therefore, we realized that through our use of persuasive rhetoric and theory we were able to learn, and, in turn, help others learn, too.
