The Wall
Jordan Buchheit
Dr. Mark Appold, Faculty Mentor

In 2002 after the second intifada, the state of Israel began constructing a separation barrier along the West Bank. Israel stated its goal was to prevent the recent increase in terrorist attacks that had been plaguing the Israeli population. While traveling generally along the 1949 Armistice line, the majority of the wall was constructed within the West Bank; an action which drew wide criticism from both the Palestinians and the international community, who claimed that the wall was a violation of international law and an attempt by Israel to annex more territory. This paper will be an attempt to briefly analyze the history of the wall, its proposed route, the results of its construction, and the legality of the wall under both Israeli and international law. Finally, it will attempt to examine the role the wall will play in future peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
