A Historical View of Apartheid in South Africa

On June 4, 1948 the National Party in South Africa became the governing party of South Africa. The foundation of apartheid under the National Party was to maintain white supremacy forever, therefore being superior to Africans, Coloureds, and Indians. In 1948 the inferior treatment of African people was already in practice in South Africa, yet the government sought to legally maintain manipulation of the people through any means to keep the white man in power. The question is how did white South Africans, although the minority, rise to such power over the native people? Why did white South Africans in 1948 vote for a legal separateness? This paper discusses the historical conditions that led to the development of apartheid and the goals that it was designed to address.
