The Easter Rising: England's Mishandling of the Irish Situation
Fiona E. Williams
Dr. Thomas Zoumaras, Faculty Mentor

In Ireland, The Easter Rising of 1916 is still a monumental and controversial event. By following the trends in public opinion one can see where and how the British government mishandled the Irish rebellion. The initial reaction of the Irish public was strongly against the rebels. Within a few weeks this trend had begun to change. When looked within its historical context, The Easter Rising is out of place and initially largely unsupported. So what caused the shift in opinion and subsequent rebellions that eventually led to Irish freedom? My research argues that had the situation and people been dealt with differently, The Easter Rising may not have come to be a rallying point in Irish history.
