Developing Multimedia Materials to Match Common Language Therapy Goals

Student clinicians in the Truman State University Speech and Hearing Clinic were surveyed to identify the most common therapy goals and themes. Clinicians were also asked for suggested topics and themes for which additional therapy materials would be useful, such as animals, grocery shopping, and cooking. In response to the survey, the research group developed interactive electronic books using My Own Bookshelf (SoftTouch Inc.) software. This software provides a template for creating electronic books that can be adapted for a wide variety of special needs. Children learn from experience with the world and may benefit from manipulating real objects. Eventually they must learn to interpret 2D representations, such as photos and drawings. Using electronic books that match a child's experience with real life locations and objects can help the child make the leap from 3D to 2D. My Own Bookshelf makes it feasible to create individualized therapy resources.
