An Analysis and Performance of Sean Nos Traditional Irish Music on the Trumpet
Brian P. Garrison
Dr. Greg Jones, Faculty Mentor

Traditional Irish folk music is an important aspect of American culture, as it has been assimilated into our popular music, symbols, and holidays. By looking back to traditional styles of Irish music, such as sean nos unaccompanied singing, and the theories surrounding them, then adapting this knowledge to modern day instruments like the trumpet, new insights may be gained into what makes Irish music truly unique. The sound of trumpet closely imitates the uniqueness of Irish vocal music, and by doing this, helps demonstrate the distinction of Irish melodies as they can be adapted from the voice to a wind instrument. A performance presentation will analyze the melodic structure and musical qualities of Irish traditional music through a visual presentation and performance of sean nos music on the trumpet.
