What Eyes Have Not Seen: A Documentary On Ghetto

This project came to life when I was thinking of producing a written documentary, as a term assignment, for my Writing as Critical Thinking class. Wondering if the students in my class, who used the word ghetto, knew what it was they were really talking about, provided the impetus for me to research ghetto. Ghetto is commonly defined as a quarter of a city in which a minority group lives because of social, legal, or economic pressures. This study is based on interviews I conducted in the south side of Chicago, which can be seen as the epitome of a ghetto, with a high crime rate, drug transactions carried out to make a living, gangs that include eleven-year-olds, gang fights, families of five in small apartments in buildings in terrible conditions, with over twenty floors and broken elevators. This documentary seeks to enlighten its audience by bringing them into a world that many speak of but do not know about.
