Prevalence of Eating Disorders among Female Collegiate Athletes
Kate R. Tepper* and Kara L. Pettit
Dr. Janice Clark Young, Faculty Mentor

Eating disorders are prevalent on college campuses nationwide, and potentially among female athletes. This study will investigate the prevalence of eating disorders among female varsity athletes at Truman State University and examine the potential relationship between eating disorders and the type of uniform worn. Participants will complete an online survey about eating behaviors, perceived body image, demographics, sport played, and length of involvement. Data will be analyzed through SPSS using t-tests and tests for correlation between variables. It is hypothesized that the more revealing the uniform, the higher the likelihood of a female athlete having an eating disorder with the size and fit of a team uniform influencing the eating habits and perceived body images of these athletes. Athletic departments, coaches, and athletes can benefit through increased awareness of the contributing causes of eating disorders.
