A periodic, one-dimensional acoustic filter was constructed by modulating the diameter of a PVC pipe between 1.5 and 3.2 cm. The transmission spectrum of the filter exhibits band gaps, or frequency regions for which the (white noise) input signal is highly attenuated, which are primarily determined by the periodicity of the filter. A straightforward theoretical framework is presented that permits an accurate description of experimentally observed band gaps for a variety of conditions.
