Evolution of a New Biotech Industry: A Case Study of Stem Cells

The project first looks at the effects of the 2001 Bush decision regarding the use of embryonic stem cells for federally funded research and passage of the 2003 California Stem Cell Initiative on the location of companies. Furthering the research, the project seeks to use information gathered on the new emergent sector of the stem cell industry to build a model for the biotech industry as a whole. The model determines the factors related to the success or failure of firms within the biotechnology industry. Current data gathered showed that there was little to no effect resulting from the 2001 Bush policy, and a majority of firms remained within the United States after the decision. The California Stem Cell Initiative shows a dramatic increase in the number of firms founded in California. Model data is still pending.
