The Application of Notes Inégales to Courante I from Bach’s 1st English Suite in A Major
Michelle L. Jones♦
Dr. Jay Bulen, Faculty Mentor

An important aspect of French performance in the Baroque period was the use of rhythmic alterations called notes inégales. French performance was not isolated from the rest of Europe. It is likely that composers outside of France were aware of the practice and expected it to be used in their own pieces composed in the French style. Historically authentic performances today are typically played as written, but another possibility is available for pieces composed in the French style, such as dance suites. An example of notes inégales applied to the first courante from English Suite I in A Major by J.S. Bach demonstrates how this practice can be applied to enhance music composed outside of France.
