Filmmaking on TikTok: An Experimental Playground
Research suggests that TikTok has emerged as a leading video-sharing platform, with billions of users creating, watching, and sharing videos daily. Because these users have complete control over the videos that they make, many unique styles and forms have been created. Avant-garde and experimental videos are pervasive on the platform. This study explores this side of TikTok with attention to trends and the algorithm. Through a literature review of existing data and a film analysis of current TikToks, this research will explain how TikTok lends itself to experimental filmmaking, including the algorithm as a nonlinear plot device, and the influence experimental TikToks could have on the film industry. As these young filmmakers progress into larger careers, this research suggests the development of a new age of experimental film in the mainstream. Future research could include looking into specific genres or directors on social media.
