The Reality of Research: Diagnosing and Troubleshooting Malfunctioning Instrumentation
Methamphetamine production continues to be a prevalent issue in many Missouri counties. The clandestine labs in these areas pose a potential environmental threat to many of Missouri’s major rivers and their main tributaries as waste from these labs are often not properly disposed of. In order to assess the severity of methamphetamine-related contamination a method for quantitative analysis was developed utilizing Capillary Electrophoresis (CE). During the course of this research, many issues were encountered with the CE instrument. Multiple troubleshooting approaches were taken, including the purchase of another instrument to dissect for parts. While the process of troubleshooting continues, what has been discovered already will be presented.
