Sustainability in Farming: Comparison of land management practices implemented on Rented vs Owned Land
Sustainability in agriculture has become a growing concern and little is known about how land tenure affects the implementation of sustainable farming practices. Previous research suggests that farmers may be less likely to implement conservation strategies and work towards sustainability on rented ground, which may be due to the temporary nature of rental agreements. We attended Missouri Soybean regional meetings to distribute a written survey to collect information from northeastern Missouri farmers on their implementation of sustainable practices on land they own compared to land they rent. A better understanding of land tenure and sustainability implementation will be a great resource for extension agents, producers, lessors of farmland, industry professionals, and legislation decision makers.
