Jainism: Constructive Discourse and Influence
The Jain tradition is a lesser-known religious institution of India; however, the impact Jain philosophy has had on India and the world is undeniable. Construction of Jainism is in large part due to Jain ascetics throughout history and their influence on the maintenance of their community. However, the importance of Jain beliefs is rooted in the philosophical ideals and not the people whose discourse made them. I will conduct this research using the discourse historical approach of Martin Reisigl and Ruth Wodak, and also theories by Jonathan Z. Smith regarding religious formation. I will discuss the development, influence, and impact of Jainism, with a specific focus on the Shvetambara Murtipujak sect.
