The Arabidopsis FASCIATA1 protein is a subunit of Chromatin Assembly Factor-1, which is involved in the function of both shoot and root apical meristems. We have cloned and demonstrated that there are two Fas1 paralogs in the maize genome. RT-PCR was performed on mRNA isolated from 14-day shoot apical meristem-enriched tissue and the amplified product was cloned and sequenced. This study indicated that both ZmFas1a and ZmFas1b are expressed. To characterize these two paralogs, DNA sequence diversity was assessed among North American inbred lines, and open-pollinated landraces from New Mexico and Mexico. Interestingly, among the maize lines studied ZmFas1a exhibited far more DNA sequence diversity than ZmFas1b.
