Latinx Identity: Through the Lens of María Lugones and Gloria Anzaldúa

In exploring the view of Latinx identity through the perspective of María Lugones' idea of the multiple selves and her idea of purity vs. impurity, as well as Gloria Anzaldúa's idea of a new mestiza consciousness in her work, a new viewing of Latinx identity is created. Through analysis and synthesis of these two philosophers' works, a formation of Pan-Latin American identity is created that calls for ambiguity and an ever-shifting perspective when viewing identity. To show the differing views of Latinx identity and the need for a new view of Latinx identity, an analysis of José Vasconcelos' La Raza Cósmica is also explored to show previous conceptions of Pan-Latin American identity with their limitations; mainly focusing on the concept of mestizaje, Afro Latinx, and Indigenous Latinx identities.
