Quantifying Intrafractional Pelvic Organ Motion due to Bladder Filling Rate During Adaptive Radiotherapy Treatments
This research investigates pelvic organ motion, specifically the anterior wall of the rectum and superior wall of the prostate, due to bladder filling during adaptive radiation treatments. To reduce the amount of radiation hitting healthy tissue, it is essential to find the margins for the motion of these critical structures. Both magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography images of patients were uploaded into MATLAB where 3D models of the stomach, bladder, rectum, and prostate were constructed. These models were then analyzed using python code. The recommended margin for the anterior rectum wall was 10mm and the recommended margin for the superior prostate wall was 5mm. These results are slightly tighter than current margins, but more patient scans need to continue to be analyzed before a change is made.
