Work Values and Their Impacts on People's Ways of Working

Xinyu Zhou
Dr. Amber Johnson, Faculty Mentor

Work values are tied with work. Previous research has shown that work values differ from person-to-person and they can impact people’s choices of jobs. I conducted semi-structured interviews with people who currently have a job to address the following questions: 1) What do different groups of people value most in their work? 2) What factors influence their work values? 3) Do work values influence their choices of job, and if so, how? 4) Are people willing to devote themselves so that their work values can be fulfilled? Through the analysis, I found that factors like responsibility and interest can influence work values. When people are considering their choices of job, work values are decisive on most occasions. Willingness to devote for more work values depend on salaries and people’s attitudes towards working.
