Ankle Taping Effect on Balance and Postural Sway in Division II Female Soccer Athletes

Renee E. Williams♦
Dr. Brandy Schneider, Faculty Mentor

Introduction: Balance is important within athletics. Previous studies found no difference in balance of non-taped and taped ankles. Athletes reported feeling more supported with taped ankles. Purpose: To determine if taping influences one’s balance and perception of balance. Methods: Eight female soccer players ages 18-23 completed single-leg balance assessments using the Biodex Biosway with taped and non-taped ankles. Balance errors were compared. A survey assessed lower body injury and perception of support. Results: No significant difference between the ankle parameters (t=.876) were found. The subjects would balance on the posterior, lateral aspect of there foot. Conclusions: Taping a soccer athlete’s ankle has no effect on one’s balance. They spend most of the time on the lateral and posterior aspect of there foot when they balance.
