The effect of parenting style and family structure on academic achievement in adolescents that live in a rural setting

Three parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive) and six family structures (biological parents, single mother, single father, mother & stepfather, father & stepmother, and other) were compared to self-reported GPA of 193 high school students. The data was analyzed by using a causal comparative research design. Parenting style and student GPA were looked at by using a single factor analysis of variance to determine that there was no significant difference between different parenting styles and student GPA. Family Structure and student GPA were looked at by using a single factor analysis of variance and the results showed that there was indeed a significant difference between different family structures and student GPA. Finally, family structure and parenting style were looked at together to see if there was an interaction effect on student GPA using a multiple factor analysis of variance. The results showed that there was a three-way interaction.
