Media Literacy Programs and Adolescent Smoking Behavior
Lisa J. Hanson
Dr. Diane Johnson, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this proposed study is to determine if the use of a media literacy program has a significant effect on adolescents’ tobacco use. Past studies on anti-tobacco messages suggested the use of a media literacy program in future research. The subjects in this cross-sectional study will by 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. There is a control group and experimental group in each age group, constructed as tiered, non-random samples. The experimental group will receive the eight-week media literacy program, Just Think. A pre-test is conducted in order to determine the smoking status and media use before the treatment. Post-tests are administered at the end of the experimental period and after one year. Results will be subjected to chi-square analysis. Parental consent will be obtained and results of the experiment will be shared with all participants at the end of the study.
