Sound the Trumpet! An Analysis of Common Trumpet Sounds in Modern Practice
The trumpet is used in numerous musical settings. This presentation will examine two prominent categories of music in which the trumpet appears: Orchestral and Contemporary Commercial Music. Each genre has its own unique sound, distinguished by differing tempi, rhythms, melodic ideas, and harmonic ideas. While the accepted sound of the trumpet in each genre is not exclusive, the sound from one genre does not automatically fit in with a different genre. What makes each of these sounds distinct from one another, and how can the listener describe them? This presentation’s goal is to add basic musical vocabulary, introductory music analysis skills, and deepen aural enjoyment for casual listeners by comparing and contrasting two broad categories of music that trumpet is used in, the historical and modern interpretations of these categories, as well as an analysis of tone production for trumpet players with a discussion of timbre, articulation, and sound production.
