Tubatronics: An Unconventional Venture into the Process of Creating and Performing a Piece for Tuba and Electronics
Since the twentieth century, composers have experimented with electronics to push the boundaries of what is considered music. This has resulted in a specialized field of music marked by innovation and improvisation with a variety of instruments. Despite the tuba’s flexibility and versatility, it is underrepresented in modern electronic compositions.
Beginning with a video of a recorded performance of our piece for tuba and electronics, we will discuss the considerations necessary for the composition and performance of a piece that combines the use of technology and unconventional methods of tuba performance. It discusses the process of composition, as well as insights learned upon reflection. This includes the use of a live tubist demonstrating the extended techniques employed in the composition and an overview of the technology and notation incorporated.
