Translanguaging Practices in a Rural Midwestern School
Over the last decade, there has been an influx of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in rural midwestern areas largely due to the employment opportunities at meat and dairy factories. Despite the increased number of CLD students, rural midwestern schools often struggle to meet their needs due to a lack of access to necessary multilingual resources. Translanguaging pedagogy and practices have been shown to support CLD students in urban areas by positioning their linguistic and cultural diversity as resources for their own learning and reexamining the centering and prevalence of English monolingualism within the United States public education. My current study modified translanguaging research done in urban areas to examine the replicability of a translanguaging practice within a rural context. Since this study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, my methodology and results were limited, but it lays the groundwork for vital future research.
