The Impact of Technology on Wind Ensemble Repertoire
Technology has affected music drastically. These impacts are most notably observed in popular music but are also evident in other genres, including music for wind ensembles. Examples of how technology affects the music industry include social media outreach, notation technology, recording technology, and more. These technological advancements increase consumers’ access to music, impact the composition process through the use of notation software, and alter the timbre of both classical and popular music. In order to understand the impact of technology on wind ensemble repertoire specifically, I examined scholarly writing and analyzed pieces for wind ensembles that include technology. Those pieces are: “The Haunted Carousel” by Erika Svanoe, “Abandoned Toy Shop” by Timothy Loest, and “Ecstatic Waters” by Steven Bryant. The composers of these pieces use technology to create a unique timbre that adds to the traditional wind band and also provides a contemporary experience for both performers and listeners alike.
