Assessment of Stressful Life Events in Rural Alternative Education Students: A Pilot Study
Laura E. Kresl
Dr. Carol Cox, Faculty Mentor
This study assessed frequency and intensity of perceived negative and positive stressful life events of a convenience sample of rural adolescents in an alternative school using a stress inventory. Overall, most respondents did not report experiencing the vast majority of the stressful life events in the past year; and of those who did experience stressful life events, more events were perceived as ‘good’ versus ‘bad’ events having only a modest effect on their lives. Although most respondents experienced few stressful life events, all can be offered individual counseling or preventive interventions such as social skills training and training in stress management techniques.
